Driving an electric car has become much more commonplace in Jena in recent years. The public charging infrastructure has been expanded and the number of electric vehicles (purely electric and hybrid) has increased significantly from 50 vehicles in 2016 to 1,422 vehicles (allocated e-license plates at the end of 2022).

Three buses on route 15 have been running quietly and purely electrically through Jena's streets for some time now.

Since August 2016, two purely electrically powered company vehicles have been available to employees of the city of Jena at the Am Anger 26 site. Since then, more and more journeys, especially in the city area, but also to neighboring municipalities, have been carried out emission-free.

Other electrically powered service vehicles are in use at the Löbstedter Straße site of the municipal services company Kommunalservice Jena and the municipal real estate company Kommunale Immobilien Jena, among others. In total, the city has 24 purely electric and 1 hybrid service vehicle in its own fleet (as of June 2021).

The e-car sharing location in Jena (Am Anger 26) was inaugurated on 11.01.2019 by Thuringia's Environment Minister Anja Siegesmund.

The ministry provided funding, and investments were also made by Stadtwerke Jena and the car sharing company teilAuto. The city of Jena provided the space. A public charging station with 2 charging points was also installed.

In Jena, you can currently charge your car at 26 public charging stations with 51 charging points (as of May 2021).

The Stadtwerke Jena Group's charging stations are part of the ladenetz.de network. Information on the locations is also available there. The charging stations in Jena have a special feature: they only charge with green electricity.

Another service offered by Stadtwerke Energie Jena-Pößneck GmbH is the installation of a charging station (Walbox) for purchase at home, and there are also special offers for tenants in cooperation with the housing cooperatives. Further information, including information on funding opportunities, can be found on the Stadtwerke Jena Group website.

There are many different opinions on the offer to use e-scooters as an alternative to cars or as a supplement to public transport.

These vehicles, whether they are called e-scooters, e-scooters or e-scooters, fall under the Small Electric Vehicles Ordinance. This regulates participation in road traffic. The road traffic regulations also apply.

Driving on sidewalks or pedestrian zones with a "cyclist free" sign is generally prohibited for e-scooters.

E-scooters may only be ridden on the road and on cycle paths and shared or separate cycle/walking paths that are signposted as such.
In Jena, they are currently provided by a privately operated rental company. They can only be booked via the corresponding app.

Note

The city of Jena is not financially involved in this sharing system.
