With its hilly terrain, this inaugural tour on the Napoleon Bike Trail is especially suited for anyone with plenty of energy to spare. Whether that energy comes from your calves or your bike is up to you.
The group bike tour starts at 12:00 p.m. in Jena at the Papiermühle. After the first two uphill sections, there will be a short cultural break at the Krippendorf post mill, including a guided tour. Afterward, the ride continues at a leisurely pace downhill through the Schötener Promenade and Apolda to the Eiermann Building on the Napoleon Bike Trail. Across from the Eiermann Building, the Auen-Café run by Lebenshilfe-Werk Weimar/Apolda e.V. offers cold drinks, coffee, and cake. All registered cyclists will be treated to a guided tour of the Eiermann Building and the “Museum auf Zeit” (Temporary Museum) GlockenStadtMuseum. This iconic modernist architectural landmark was built in 1906–07 as a textile factory and was renovated and expanded in 1938–39 by architect Egon Eiermann on behalf of Total AG Feuerlöschgerätewerke. Today, the Eiermann Building houses, among other things, the “Museum auf Zeit” and offers space for work and exhibitions, as well as a rooftop terrace with a view of the outdoor grounds. After the one-hour guided tour, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the museum free of charge, learning about the history of the bell and textile industries as well as the special exhibition “C’est la guerre.”
Starting at 5:00 p.m., we’ll head back to Jena together or go our separate ways.
